AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) was the most visible and well known of the many
grassroots organizations that
sprang up to fight AIDS in the
face of government neglect and
homophobia in the 1980s. In
1988, furious at the slow rate of
drug tests and approvals, over
1,500 activists from around the
country infiltrated the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA)
at the Maryland headquarters.
Many of their demands would
become FDA policy a year later.
In the late ‘90s, Rita Hester
and Chanelle Picket, two Black
transgender women, were
murdered in the Boston area. In
response, their friends organized the first Transgender Day
of Remembrance (TDoR), a
simultaneous action in Boston
and San Francisco to honor
the lives and losses of the trans
community. To this day, TDoR is
observed on November 20 each
year, the day Chanelle Picket
was murdered.
In 2021, footage emerged of a
Black woman being dragged
by her hair out of Nellie’s Bar, a
popular queer bar in Washington, D.C. that had been plagued
with allegations of racism for
years. In response, the Black
queer community
organized a block party protest
outside the bar, which caused
the owners to briefly shut the
space down for “sensitivity
training.”
